Thanksgiving is right around the corner
Being that we are starting off the season with Thanksgiving, I want to give thanks for each and every one of ya'll that have made this blog experiment a budding success! I would not have imagined that I would see over 1500 hits on here in just under a year that I have been doing this!
Now on to business, what are we going to be pairing with our Thanksgiving dinner? Well, are you looking to pair the wine with dinner or are you wanting to experiment and work dinner around the wines? I can assure you that I can accommodate either direction that you want to go.
If you are looking to pair the wine with dinner and come in to see me, then I will give you a jump on what questions that I'll ask. First, is your dinner going to be traditional (oven roasted turkey, bread stuffing, mashed potatoes with giblet gravy, cranberry sauce, candied yams), semi-traditional (fowl of sorts, more rustic style vegetables), or is it going to be non-traditional (cut of red meat, vegetables, etc). Depending on the style of dinner, I might ask what herbs and spices are being used not only on the meat but also with what vegetables as well. Once I have that information, I will definitely ask what your wine preference is (red or white, sweet or dry).
Once I have this, I then can help you find the best match for your meal.
If you're looking to pair your dinner with your wine, all I will need to know is what your wine preference is. I then can help you determine which flavors will compliment your wine. If you are looking to be experimental this holiday season, this is the best approach to use.
Again, thanks to each and every one of you guys out there! I appreciate ya'll allowing me to help enhance your meals and help plan out your party events!
I look forward to seeing ya'll in the store this season!

Lockwood Merlot
As I have been roaming around the store looking at all the wines, I realized that I haven't posted anything recently that is an everyday find.
Well, here it is! The silky texture and soft tannins are complimented with brught red fruits and a long, smooth finish!
The Lockwood wines have been a staple for me for quite a few years now and with a vibrant new label it is definitely a diamond that awaits to be rediscovered under $13.

Apple, lemon, white flowers, and a hint of sweet oak. The mouth mirrors the nose with a great richness, nice texture, and crisp clean flavors of golden delicious apples and lemon custard. This huge chardonnay holds true to its name! This is definitely one that should be in anyone's rack. Coming in at under $40 this bottle can rival some of the other big shots out there!

Longboard Point Break Red
This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and a bit of Zinfandel, Carignane, and Malbec offers just that. I like what Longboard put on their homepage for their winery. They stated:
Surfing is part sport, part meditation and all working within, rather than against, nature. Winemaking? Pretty similar approach"

A truely decadent wine that will pair with the heartiest cut steak or big pasta dish. But the price doesn't do its name sake justice at under $48 a bottle!

Aduro Cabernet
So we just got this goodie in that I want to share with ya'll. This explosive cab comes from a neat little vineyard on a hillside over looking the city of Yontville, CA. The nose exudes black cherry all the while in the mouth is silky tannins and has intense flavors of spice, cocoa powder and deep dark fruits. We only got a limited amount of this small production (only 535 cases produced total) in. This is a first come first serve basis, so if you are looking for an outstanding bottle, I highly recommend this. It definitely is a steal at around $60 with your Spec's key.

Holiday Season Around the Corner
With the holidays quickly approaching us, there are going to be a lot of looking for and requesting items that I may not have in our store. I want ya'll to rest assured that I will do my best to fill your requests for this holiday season.
Though I want ya'll to remember that it may take time for me to get your requests and we need to plan for it.
Here is what I have been suggesting:
If you are planning a party of any type, please give me at least two (2) weeks if possible to make sure that we can get in the items that you want. I understand to pull off an entertainment event can be somewhat stressful, especially during the holiday season, so this allows me time to find alternatives if your initial preference is unavailable and make sure that you are happy with the alternative.
If you need to order something as a gift, let us know as soon as you get an idea. This is pretty important because when giving gifts we tend to look for items that our loved ones and friends generally won't buy for themselves .Another key part of this planning is letting me know when you need it by because a lot of us travel for the holidays. Some of these ideas may require more work to find for you, but remember I will try to get it in IF I can. If I can't get it in then I will let you know and I will try to find something of the same caliber for you.
I pride myself on doing everything that I possibly can to get special requests in or finding something that will fit the bill if I can't get a specific request in because of availability. Let me help you make this holiday season a memorable one!
I look forward to hearing from or seeing you!!

Eberle Cabernet/Syrah
Here's one that has caught my attention...The winemaker's tribute to the land downunder. The ripe Syrah throws down delicious blueberry and full blown meaty flavors, while the Cabernet packs in the full bodied plumminess (yes, I went there). One more wonderful bottle of juice produced by the winemaker at Eberle. Come and see me about this wine at under $22 with the Key discount.

Hollis Pinot Noir
From winemaker Paul Hobbs comes another Spec-tacular wine. This juice comes from some prized vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley. It offers up vanilla, spice, and everything nice to accommodate the wonderful cassis, black cherry with hints of chocolate for a long finish. This elegant but eloquent Pinot definitely shows what it means to be a hidden value coming in under $35.

Busy, Busy!
I have to apologize about the lack of updates that I have been giving you all! I have been busy in the store trying to get some goodies in for ya'll, as well as doing a little rearranging. I have been working on getting some very limited production wines in and it is finally paying off.
Over the past several months, I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of some Williams Selyem wines, along with a wine from Retour. I can tell you that I have received an awesome unoaked Chardonnay and a Sonoma Pinot Noir in from Williams Selyem. I am still waiting for the Retour Pinot Noir to come in but I have been told to expect in this week. I can tell you that I will believe it when I see it on our receiving docks! I am so excited!
These are very small production products and have outstanding reputations that follow them. Please remember that these are very special items that I have managed to bring in and I have to make sure that I take care of everyone that I possibly can. In order to do that, I ask that those of you who ask about these please have a Spec's Key and that you have at least 1,500 points on the card in order to purchase any of these products at their retail price.
If you do not know how many points that you have on your Spec's Key, please stop by and see me at the store and I will be more than happy to look up your account and let you know!
These are first come, first serve type of items; however limited availability applies in purchasing these items.
I am hoping that the success of this will spur the ability to get more of these types of wines in.
As always Bloggers, I look forward to seeing and talking to ya'll!

My Picks!
I have decided to bring back something that I did several years ago. I have a wine rack setup at the front of the store in the middle aisle that has 13 wines that I selected for a quick pick up. Most of these wines I selected are ones I believe most of ya'll will enjoy by listening to what everyone has heen asking for. I have included a couple wines for the adventurous minds to try. I will be trying to change this up every month to have different offerings.
Also too, I have started an instragram account to make a quicker way to post pics of items in the store. My user name is kemahwineguy. I look forward to seeing all of ya'll following me on there. I also look forward to hearing from all of you to see what I can try to do for you.

La Flor Malbec Rose
I have been looking at the stock that is in the store and have been contemplating what would be something different and not a norm for what people have been asking me for.
Being that we are going into the infamous Texas summer, I thought I would show ya'll a Rose. Now, before you totally shut down on me, this isn't what you might think it is. Contrary to what we are used to in White Zinfandels and the likes, true Roses are dry...like their reds are. If you don't know, Roses are generally red grape varietals that have less skin contact then their respective red versions. It is the contact which gives it color, amongst other characteristics like structure from the tannins that are in the skin.
Now, I have found a Rose Malbec from Argentina that I think is a good introductory Rose, especially if you are like me and are a red wine drinker. La Flor Rose Malbec is perfect for those who still seek a fuller bodied wine but are interested in trying something new. Right up front on the nose and in the mouth, there is a burst of red and dark fruit but still holds nice structure and feel. It is a darker Rose which tell me that it does have longer skin contact which is told by the mouth feel.
This is definitely a wine that not only holds to easy comfort and bar food, but it will still hold nicely to a steak as well, remember it is still a malbec.
At under $14, it is definitely a wine that is worth experimenting with or enjoying over and over again.

Cubo Tempranillo
Looking for that everyday, not breaking the bank, easy to drink red? But are you looking for something other than the ordinary cab or merlot? Pick up a bottle of this little gem from Spain. This soft, fruit forward, easy to drink Tempranillo is definitely worth trying. Under $12 a bottle will definitely save on the wallet for an everyday wine.

Meeting with Bob Cabral from Williams Selyem
I had the pleasure of meeting the winemaker from Williams Selyem Winery, Bob Cabral, today. It was an amazing to sit in on his seminar and to hear about the wines and winery that he has producing and working for since the late 90's. The winery specializes in making Pinot Noir and does a fabulous job at it.
From their A.V.A. wines to their single vineyard labels, each one shows the dedication and passion Bob has for the Pinot Noir.
If any of ya'll are interested in his wines, please let me know. I am only taking requests on his wines at this time. They are small production and limited quantities. The wines range in price from around $66 to $93ish.

Don't be embarrassed!
In working with ya'll to find the perfect bottle, I hear a lot of people talking about not remembering what the name or label looks like. Or even when looking for a recommendations, I hear a lot of "I don't know wine speak". I want to make sure to try to clear the air and take the embarrassement out of coming in. Remember, I have been doing this for quite sometime now and can answer just about any kind of uncertain question that comes my way.
Tip #1--Can't remember a name or label? Take a picture with your cell phone. Most of us carry mobile phones today and those phones come standard with a camera in them mostly. I found that this is the easiest way to remember labels that I enjoy. We have so many things to remember in this day and age, that remembering a bottle of wine takes the back seat. Totally understandable. Utilize the technology that we already have on hand to make our everyday life easier. (I use my phone to help post on here when I find a wine that I want ya'll to know about right away).
Tip #2--Can't remember a name but remember what the label looks like? If you forget to take the picture with your phone but remember what the label looks like, we almost have it in the bag. My coworkers and I do a pretty good job at remembering a lot of labels and between all of us can pretty much figure out what you are describing. Don't sweat it!
Tip #3--Uncertain about how to describe what you like in wines that you have had and are unsure how to describe it to me? You would be amazed at how much you already know in describing wine. Don't under-estimate yourself. You know your tastebuds better than I do....but if you are still unsure, there are a couple of tips that I can suggest. 1) Take a big ol' whiff of the wine (don't be scared, stick your nose in the glass and get a big breath of what the wine smells like). I find swirling the wine in the glass before I do this helps release the aromas a little better. 2) When I go to taste the wine, I try to pay attention to the sensations that I get as soon as the wine hits my mouth. Everything from what aromas I am tasting to the feel of the wine as it goes from my lips to when I swallow. I try to notice everything that I can about the wine each time I take a sip because each sip changes.

5 Points in from Fort Stockton
Both are 2011, but both (yes, even the cab) are ready to enjoy.
The chardonnay has wonderfully juicy apples and tropical fruit with a soft finish.
The cabernet on the other hand is big with dark cherry, black pepper, and cassis with a long finish.
Both wines are under $11, come in and get a bottle for the house and see why I recommend 'em.

Tohu Sauvignon Blanc
Retailing under $11 is a steal for this wine!

El Portillo Malbec
It was absolutely amazing, even remembering that meal almost 10 years later.
El Portillo is from the Bodegas Salentein in Argentina. The line of El Portillo is considered their entry level tier but it drinks amazingly well even today's vintage.
The wine is priced nicely under $9 a bottle.
